Kathy Merrill Kelley, ASID
Principal of Merrill & Associates, Inc., Kathy Merrill Kelley loves the warmth, comforting, and welcoming quality of eclectic design. Never a purist, she always attempts to connect with the client who she considers the "real designer".
She describes her own style as "Pacific Rim" although her mainland U.S. projects range from very traditional to highly contemporary. "My interiors tend to be spare, crisp and clean. I love the use of varying layers of texture and the soft subtlety of color changes," she says.
Among the firms most distinguished clients are Kelsey Grammer (featured in Architectural Digest 2001), Carlos Santana, the Paul Mitchell Estate and George Benson. Commercial projects include the W Honolulu (formerly the Colony Surf), Waikoloa Beach Marriott and the Fairmont Orchid Hawaii. Kathy has been featured in Architectural Digest's "The AD 100, The World's Top Designers and Architects" for 2002 and 2004. Over the twenty-eight years as a designer, she has won many awards.
She is an alumna of Punahou School and the University of Colorado, and continues her education in the field of art and design. Her most valuable experience, she says, has been in the field working with other designers, architects, contractors, and trades people.
Martha Alabanza, ASID
Senior designer of Merrill & Associates, Inc., Martha Alabanza enjoys the natural collaboration created between both client and designer on various projects both residential and commercial. She attempts to combine the lasting principles of good design and creative solutions to create a comfortable and timeless space for her clients.
She is NCIDQ certified and is a graduate of the Fine Arts program at the University of Kansas where she was entered in their five-year design program. She was also a student of English literature, architecture, and art history in England.
Among the projects she has worked on are the renovation of the W Honolulu (formerly the Colony Surf), the Outrigger Waikoloa Beach Resort, Sergio's Restaurant, and several high profile private residences. Her accomplishments include a 1999 ASID Award of Honor for the Penthouse Unit at Colony Surf, and a 2002 BIA Grand Award for commercial remodeling.
